I don;t know what I'm doing
while still scrolling…
This website is a letter to the past and a window to the future. It’s been written while we are still at the mercy of the algorithmic logic of feed-based platforms. Right now, on April 2024, we can at the same time notice the consolidation of Meta owned social platforms on every level of communications, here in Brazil and on approximately half the Planet. Some decentralized, federated social networks start to emerge, but network effects make their success really hard.
Those, like me, that still remember Geocities, know that simpler times existed. However, more and more I refuse to be nostalgic and to think that it is still possible to return to a coded HTML and blog era. This is why the idea of mmm resonated with me: it is a tool easy enough for any person to use, but it still brings some of that 90s exploration vibes. And unlike Neocities, it has a lower entrance barrier and embraces the vertical logic of mobile. Even tho I’m also a fan of beautiful designs made to be seen on the desktop, the reality is the fewer and fewer people are going to go through the trouble; if they even own a computer.
I don’t know what else I’m going to do from here, but at least it moved me to create something, even if somewhat of a vent. The RSS days aren’t coming back and there’s no real purpose on being an eternal Google Reads widow. But it also doesn’t make any sense to keep producing (working) to generate content for companies that give us so little and destroy so much of our connections, both externally and internally.
(after all that, how much irony is needed to leave my insta here?)
